PLAB Test for Overseas Doctor

The Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) test demonstrate International Medical Graduates (IMGs) have the knowledge and skills necessary to practice medicine in the UK. It is designed to test doctor’s ability to work safely as a Senior House Officer (SHO) in the UK NHS (National Health Service) hospitals. Currently, the test is used to measure the skills of doctors who have graduated outside the EEA before they are approved for a license to practice. You will be set at the level of a doctor after successful completion of Foundation Year 1.   

The test is conducted by General Medical Council (GMC) to ensure that international doctors have medical and communication skills to practice in the UK. Generally, overseas doctors or IMGs from outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland, and UK national who has graduated from outside the UK, EEA or Switzerland medical school need to pass PLAB test in order to legally practice medicine in the UK. Doctors who wish to take part in PLAB test must successfully have completed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).  

The PLAB test has 2 parts:

  • Part 1: It is a computer-marked written examination which consists Extended Matching Question (EMQs) and Single Best Answer (SBA) questions. The paper contains 200 questions lasting three hours. This part can be taken in the UK and number of countries including Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Nigeria and Sri Lanka. You must pass part 1 test within two years of the date of your IELTS certificate.
  • Part 2: It consists of 14-station objective structured clinical exam (OSCE), which lasts for about one hours and 40 minutes. This part of test must be taken in the UK. You must pass part 2 within three years of passing part 1. You can attempt part 2 for four times. If you cannot pass in fourth attempt you will have to retake IELTS and both parts of the PLAB test.

Entry Requirement for PLAB test

Before you apply to take the PLAB test you must have:

  • Acceptable Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) by an institution listed in the world Health Directory of Medical Schools.
  • Attained IELTS test and score at least 7.0 in all of the four band
  • 12 months postgraduate clinical experience (Foundation Year 1 training post/internship post) from a teaching or other hospital approved by the medical registration authorities in the appropriate country.
